Waze Glossary - Understand the Abbreviations!
Here are some abbreviations used during communication among editors.
The list is non-exhaustive, we make up new ones along the way!

Abbreviation | Meaning | Explanation |
1WS | One-way Segment | |
2WS | Two-way Segment | |
AGC | At-grade Connector | A short segment which connects two other main segments, that are not grade-separated. |
AM | Area Manager | An editor which is assigned one or more specific areas to manage, other than driven areas. Refer Global Wazeopedia for more details |
ASR | Automatic Speech Recognition | The ability of a smartdevice to convert voice commands into actions on the device. |
BC | Best Continuation | The segment that Waze determines is what drivers would consider the "no turning path" or "going straight" through the intersection. This segment will get a 'continue' instruction, which is ignored by the client app. |
CC | Centrecode | Official platform for Waze Beta Testers |
CM | Country Manager | A senior map editor with edit rights for whole country. |
CS | Continue Straight | A voice prompt instruction from the app to "Continue Straight" |
DEUT | Dead End U-Turn | |
DT | Difficult Turn | |
EA | Editable Area |
The entire area within which you area able to edit items in the Waze Map Editor. This includes your driven, and managed areas. Also a WME Layer which highlights this area on the map. The WME "Editable Area" Layer does not however highlight the entire country if you are a Country Manager. |

EP | Entry Point | A point where the navigation is intended to end/stop on the client map, prompting that the destination has been reached. |
FW / Fwy | Freeway | Road Type is Freeway |
FY | Ferry | Road Type is Ferry |

GSV | Google Street view | |
GEP | Global Event Partners | Refer Global Event Partner. |
GC | Global Champ | Global Champs (GC) are part of the community leadership of Waze. |
GMAP | Google Maps | |
HN | House Number | An attribute linked to road segments, edited on a separate layer, and saved in an internal database of addresses. It appears as points on the map editor, and can be adjusted at a fine level of detail to ensure Wazers are properly directed to the correct location for that address. |
HoF | Hall of Fame | A scoreboard showing the editors with the most editing achievements in a project. These are posted after each MapRaid. |
HOV | High Occupancy Vehicle | Also known as CarPool |

IGN | Ignite | Software outsourcing company assisting Waze Geo-Ops (Map Team) - http://igniteoutsourcing.com |
INTL | International | Commonly used in Waze to refer to the ROW server infrastructure and location. |
JB | Junction Box | A feature which enables a complex intersection, or interchange composed and displayed as multiple segments to be treated by the routing server as a single junction node with multiple inputs and outputs. |
JAI | Junction Angle Info | A script that displays Junction Angles or Turn Angles in WME. It can also estimate what a turn instruction will be for a given turn. |
LM | Live Map | |
LC | Local Champs | Local Champs (LC) are part of a specific country's Community leadership. |
MC | Map Comment | Usually used by Map Editors to make a note to other editors. Does not effect routing |
mDL | Micro-dogleg | An editing technique to force certain Turn Instructions using angle manipulation at very high zoom level. Now discontinued after introduction of TIO. |
MEP | Multi Entry Point | Used for Place Area where there is multi entry points to the place. |
MH | Major Highway | Road Type is Major Highway |
mH | Minor Highway | Road Type is Minor Highway |
MMR | Mega MapRaid | Same as MapRaid, but Mega (involves collaboration of different editor communities worldwide). |
MP | Map Problem | A system-detected map problem, which may cause connectivity issues. |
MR | MapRaid | A time-limited event during which map editors join together to resolve MPs, URs, add & update Places, fix connectivity problems, add missing roads, and add/edit speed limit data in a pre-determined area of the map. |
MTE | Major Traffic Event | Large-scale events that have associated road closures. MTEs can be sporting events (marathons, triathlons, etc), festivals, parades, significant construction works, VIP visits or even (natural) disasters like flooding. |
MTU | Map Tile Update | A tile rebuilding process which happens on a cycle between 24 hours and 2 weeks (depending on tile builder efficiency), and only effects the 1kmĀ² tiles that has trigger edits. |
NA | North America | The server named "NA" for "North America", is one of the three separate Bank of Servers (infrastructure) containing Waze mapping and navigation systems. |
N/A | Not Applicable | |
NI | Not Identified | A Report Closure option, where the editor can not identify the source of the map problem because of no response from the reporter (after conversation has initiated), or the problem can not be fixed on the WME e.g. server issues / app issues. |
NP | New Place | |
NPUR | New Place Update Request | |
NS | Narrow Street | Road Type is Narrow Street |
OOA | Out of Area | Term used to describe a location that is not part of one's Editable Area. |
OOB | Out of Boundaries | Also can refer as OOA |
OR | Off-road (Road Type) | Off-road / Not maintained / 4WD |
PA | Place Area | Please refer to MY Wazeopedia Places for more info. |
PL | Permalink | A URL used to take you or someone else directly to a specific map location. It contains latitude, longitude, zoom level, visible layers, and any objects that are selected. Objects that can be selected may include a junction node, or a place, or one or more segments. |

PLR | Parking Lot Road | Road Type is Parking Lot Road |
PM | Private Message | A Private Message via Waze Forum inbox. This serves as the official and ultimate mode of communication in the Waze editor environment. |
POI | Points of Interest | |

PR | Private Road | Road Type is Private Road |
PS | Primary Street | Road Type is Primary Street |
PUR | Place Update Request | A request sent by a Wazer via app for the editor to add, remove or change certain attributes of places on the map. |

ROW | Rest of World | The server named "ROW" for the "Rest of the World", is one of the three separate Bank of Servers (infrastructure) containing Waze mapping and navigation systems. |

RTC | Real-time Closure | Segment all-lane Closure, effective real-time, and with a defined period. Can only be edited by R5/R6 editors by default, or by editors of other ranks with granted RTC Areas e.g. SMs & CCP Partners. |
RW / Rwy | Runway | Road Type is Runway |
SCM | Staff Community Manager | Staff from Waze in charge of specific country/countries in the region. |
SL | Speed Limit | |
SM | State Manager | An editor which is assigned one or more states to manage, and granted to selected R4/R5 editors. |

TBSR | Time-Based Segment Restriction | |
TBTR | Time-Based Turn Restriction | |
TIO | Turn Instruction Override | Used whenever the default Waze selected instruction is not the desired instruction for the driver. The TIO replaces the default Waze selected instruction entirely, including the TTS and instruction list. |
TL | Traffic Lock | An automatically-applied editing lock for a road segment. A lock is applied by the Waze servers to any road segments having a high volume traffic traversing it. The lock rank is the same as with manual locks |
TR | Turn Restriction | A routing prohibition from one segment to another through that junction. |
TTS | Text-to-Speech | |
TW / Twy | Taxiway | Road Type is Taxiway |
UR | Update Request | A request sent by a Wazer via app or Live Map reporting tool for the editor to add, remove or change certain attributes of segments on the map. |
UT | U-Turn | |
WF | Wayfinder | A junction that instructs users on a certain road how to continue on that same road, in situations where it may be unclear, and there would otherwise be no instruction. |
WFC | Waze For Cities | Formerly known as Connected Citizens Program. A data exchange program with government entities, private road owners and operators. See WFC at Waze site for more info. |

WME | Waze Map Editor | |
WMEB | Waze Map Editor Beta | Term used by WME Beta Tester only |
